Our Programs

Operation Food Sharing – Our 66 pantries distributed over 47,000 bags of food to over 36,000 families in need in FY 10. Our 66 pantries distributed over 47,000 bags of food to over 36,000 families in need in FY 10. This is a 5% decrease over last year, however, we are still 37% busier than in 2008 before the recession. This 5% decrease over last year is likely caused by the severe winter storms causing many pantries to close and preventing many families from getting out to a pantry.

Soup Kitchen Program – The Anne Arundel County Food & Resource Bank works with the Department of Human Resources to make sure that congregate feeding sites always have a hot meal to offer.  In 2009, our soup kitchens served more than 491,000 nutritious meals to homeless and hungry citizens in our county. This is a 23% increase over the previous year.

Nutritional Diet Program
– This program helps families whose needs go beyond standard food pantry items. The goal of the Nutritional Diet Program is to ensure that seniors and infants with diet constraints are not left at risk of hunger or malnutrition, which could increase poor health. The past year approximately 1,500 families were assisted through this program. This is a 50% increase over last year.

Furniture Program – The Anne Arundel County Food Bank distributes furniture, appliances and other household items at no charge to our clients through referrals from the Department of Social Services, and other service oriented agencies. In this past year, this program decreased by 20% assisting 288 families and 6 pantries and soup kitchens with items valued at over $91,000.  This decrease may be due to job loss, the combining of households and families downsizing in effort to save money.

Wheels for Work Program - Many unemployed families find themselves in that position due to lack of transportation. Used car donations allow us to get these clients on their feet and on the road to independence.  Vehicles donated are never sold; they are matched to a family in need.  We work with the Department of Social Services in securing donated cars for clients in need in Anne Arundel County. Over the past year, we donated 4 vehicles to a person in need. Distributing 100% of vehicles’ donated in FY 09.

Professional Medical Equipment – The distribution of medical equipment including but not limited to wheel chairs, transfer chairs, electric scooters, hospital beds, and walkers to clients free of charge through referrals by Dept. of Aging, Department of Social Services and other service oriented agencies. The AACFB Loaned medical equipment to 130 individuals this past year valued at approximately $40,000.  This is a 21% increase over last year.

An average of one in sixteen of Anne Arundel County’s residents, over 28,000 people live in poverty. Most distressing of all, nearly a third of people in poverty are children (over 9,000).
